Our public health and global public health research
Public Health at the University of Nottingham is home to academics with a very broad range of interests and expertise. These encompass quantitative and qualitative techniques, primary studies and research synthesis, UK and global health concerns. The main groupings of research in the division are as follows:
Determinants of disease. There is a large group in the academic unit focused on research and policy development in the area of the lifestyle determinants of chronic disease. This has grown from a long-term strength in studies regarding the role of tobacco and now encompasses alcohol and obesity also.
Health informatics. The academic unit has for over two decades now built a strong record in clinical epidemiology utilising electronic databases of health information. This mainly based on UK records but has also utilised data from the US, Sweden and Denmark. These techniques have been widely applied to study cancer, perinatal health, lung disease, rheumatological diseases and gastrointestinal diseases among others.
Global Health. A growing interest in the academic unit of late has been global health. Members of the team working in this area have a range of interests including, the effects of migration on health, psychiatric disease, cardiovascular disease and respiratory disease.
Evidence Synthesis. The acaemic unit is one of the hosts of the Nottingham Centre for Evidence Based Healthcare which is officially designated Centre of Excellence within the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) network. Members of the unit with an interest in these techniques apply them to a broad range of topics.

- We've developed an innovative series of non-classroom-based activities and opportunities to enhance employability, a key concern for our students, for the University and for potential employers. The purpose is to enlighten and enthuse our students about the wide range of career opportunities available in public health, to provide opportunities to develop the skills taught on the course in real world contexts, and to forge networks with potential employers.
- Working in partnership with local, national and international employers has been key to the success of the course, especially the strategic use of our alumni network, created over 25 years.
- The course offers broad-ranging networking opportunities internally in academia, and with key external organisations, including the World Health Organisation, NGOs, and local government.
- We run a student-centred seminar series with external speakers on innovative issues, a careers day with a wide range of external organisations providing information and networking, in addition to workshops to provide advice and support for PhD applications.
- A highlight for students has been the opportunity to collaborate in policy development with the Royal Society for Public Health.
